5th Brabant Open Report

The I.T.A. were represented by a small team from North Mon Taekwon-Do and I.M.A.A. at the 5th Open Brabant Championships in Mierlo near Eindhoven in January.

The competitors were Sarah Barry and Johnathan Miloudi accompanied by Jack Sheehan (Umpire) & Pat Barry (Coach) and Chloe Aboud and her mother Joanne.

The six members met up in the Departures area in Dublin Airport.

The Championships took place on Sunday January 23rd in the Sports Hall De Weijer in Mierlo with 521 competitors from 11 different countries in attendance.First to hit the Tatamis was Chloe Aboud in I Degree Tuls, but rather surprisingly lost out on a 3 – 2 decision. Chloe was to bounce back from this disappointment in the -50kg sparring category to dominate this division and convincingly take first place later in the day.

Next up was Sarah Barry in II Degree 15 to 17 Year Tuls and having won her way through to the semis she also found herself on the wrong side of a 3 – 2 decision. Sarah put the disappointment behind her to come back strongly with Choong Jang in the 3rd place play off to win 5 – 0. In the Sparring Sarah competed in the +60kg sparring division for the first time and despite winning her quarter final she came up against taller and stronger girls and was unable to place.

Johnathan Miloudi came through a very competitive section in 15 – 17 Year II Tuls to take first place with a very strong Choong Jang. With momentum behind him Johnathan won through to the final of the -58kg division having earlier seen off opponents from Italy, Holland and Slovenia. The final started well with Johnathan taking the lead a minute into the bout. Then a combination of a slipped shin pad and a clash of knee to shin restricted Johnathan’s mobility on the mats and he was to lose the final on a spilt decision.

Overall a very successful and worthwhile trip with the four competitors winning two 1st places, one 2nd & one 3rd and as importantly gaining more experience on the international front.l

It also gave Mr. Sheehan an opportunity to umpire at another European event and for all the Irish contingent to meet up with their European colleagues with Master Coos, Master Willy van de Mortel, Tomaz Barada, Stefano Minotti, Pascal Raeijmaekers to name but a few all in attendance.
