Bandon Taekwon-Do club has been in existence now for 8 years under the expert instruction of Mr. Leonard Coughlan; certified in level one coaching with the Irish Martial Arts Commission recognised by the Taekwon-Do Advisory Board and the Irish Sports Council. This club has become an integral part of community, and, as the many parents and students of this club will attest to, has provided excellent training to date. There are no shortage of accolades to the disciplined approach by Mr. Coughlan, who is well respected by students and parents alike.
The now full time academy offers a more extensive list of courses to increase its engagement with the community. Taekwon-Do will naturally remain at the fundamental core of the academy, and kickboxing classes will continue as usual. The difference for regular club members will be the greater amenities available in this new space; a fully matted training area, a more extensive range of equipment, changing rooms and shower, students relaxation area/parent’s waiting room with a big screen TV. New courses include a range of fitness classes, ladies only kick boxing, fitness boot camp and boxing training.
The academy’s boxing coach Ben Coughlan extends a very warm welcome to all students and he looks forward to a very positive future for this new course. Ben has successfully completed level one in the National Coaching Development Programme in association with the Irish Amateur Boxing Association. He also continues his own training as a competitor having won the Munster Intermediate Championships at age twenty, and participated in many national and international tournaments since then. He is presently training for the All Irelands in November 2011. Ben has also been certified by Cork College of Commerce in ‘Psychology and Social Studies’, which supports the well rounded training he gives his students. This new course made available at Bandon Taekwon-Do Academy has been extremely well received, and its young and dynamic coach is described as an inspirational addition to the academy.
The official launch of this fantastic new academy of martial arts, sport and fitness took place on Sunday 13th February. Master Kenneth Wheatley presided over the official ribbon cutting ceremony at the Bandon Taekwon-Do Academy. Master Wheatley, the president of the Irish Taekwon-Do association and a 7th degree master of Taekwon-Do, travelled from Wicklow in honour of the occasion. The academy welcomes the public to come and take a look at its facilities; however numbers on the academy premises are limited, therefore it is advised to call in advance.
