Cork Open 2015 Report

The Irish Taekwon-Do Association hosted the 15th Cork Open Championships in the Neptune Stadium, Cork on the weekend of the 14th & 15th February. The tournament was made up of 614 competitors from around the country including many experienced international competitors and World & European champions. The competition was run by the ITA tournament & Umpire committee of Mrs Laura Ryan, Master Pat Barry, Mr Stephen Ryan, Mr Mark Buckley & Master Tim Forde with the assistance of dozens of umpires from clubs around the country.Saturday’s competition was made up of cadets (aged 14 – 17), seniors (18+) and for the first time at an ITA tournament a veterans (+35 years) section. There were many excellent performances over the course of the day across the patterns, sparring, special technique & breaking competitions.

The best overall female senior award was shared between Sarah Lehane & Sarah Barry, with 2 Golds each, while the best overall junior male award was presented to Luke McGrath of Rivervalley with 2 Golds & a Silver while Ellen Ince & Maeve Magee shared the best overall junior female with two Gold medals each. While Eddie Dillon of Cork ITA was awarded the Best overall male competitor.  

On Sunday competitors up to the age of 13 took part in patterns, sparring and special technique, across 7 competition rings. Notable performances on the day came from Alex Murgatroyd, Ciara Brogan, Finn Martin, Fionn Hagan, Gavin Fitzgerald, Hannah-Rose Eccles, Jack Barret, Marius Mamaliga and Shantelle Sheehan who all won two Gold medals.

After the two days of competition, the overall best club at the ITA Cork Open was won by Cork ITA with a points tally of 114, Rivervalley TKD finished 2nd with 105 points, while North Mon-Carrigaline finished in 3rd place with 62 points.

The next ITA tournament is the Dublin Open which takes place in the National Basketball Arena, Dublin on March 28th & 29th
