GM Tran Remembered

It’s difficult to believe that a year has passed since the tragic death of ITF President Grand Master Trần Triệu Quân. Grand Master Tran 9th Dan, was the democratically elected President of the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF), following the passing of General Choi Hong-Hi, from mid-2003 until his death in the 2010 Haiti earthquake. GM Trần was born on 26th March 1952, in Vietnam. He began his study of Taekwon-Do when he was twelve years old. GM Trần attained the rank of black belt by the age of 17, and began teaching Taekwon-Do under his instructor, Kim Bong Sik. He emigrated to Canada in 1970 and establishing the first Taekwon-Do schools in eastern Canada. GM Trần was promoted to 7th Dan Master in 1990, 8th Dan in 2000, and 9th Dan Grand Master in 2008.  He was elected President of the ITF on June 13th, 2003. GM Trần was tragically killed in the earthquake that hit Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on 12th January 2010. In accordance with the ITF constitution, ITF Senior Vice-President Grand Master Pablo Trajtenberg was named Acting President of the ITF. GM Trần was married to Nguyễn Thị Mỹ. They had two daughters and a son; Joliette, Cécilia, and Nicolas all black belts in Taekwon-Do. Apart from his wife and children, GM Trần also left behind grandchildren; Jasmine and Sandrine; and brothers Trần Triệu Cung and Trần Triệu Lân. GM Tran worked tirelessly to continue the work of his predecessor, General Choi Hong-Hi, and was a key driving force in the development of ITF organisational structure and policies plus carried out in-depth work in promoting the teaching of the “Do” of Taekwon-Do. His work will continue through those of us who had the pleasure of spending time with and learning from him.

Rest in peace Grand Master Trần.
