Intro to Coaching TKD Course Report

Intro to Coaching TKD Course Report

On Saturday and Sunday the 21st and 22nd January the Taekwon-Do Advisory Board of the Irish Martial Arts Commission held an Introduction to Coaching ITF Taekwon-Do Course in Shannon Taekwon-Do Centre. 20 coaches, 15 of whom were from the ITA, completed two days of training under the supervision of Adrian Byrne and Stephen Ryan, both CDPI (Coaching Development Programme for Ireland) accredited tutors. The Introduction to Coaching ITF Taekwon-Do is intended for blue belts and higher (age 16 years or above) who feel they might have an interest in either helping out in their own club as an assistant instructor or indeed at some stage opening their own Taekwon-Do school. As it is a prerequisite to further coach qualifications, and as it is a relatively recent development, it often transpires that we have Instructors with many years of experience in attendance. This was again the case, with a number of 5th and 6th Dans taking part. This only served to enrich the experience for everyone, as the format of the course encourages the sharing of ideas, debate, discussion and experimentation. While the 'new' coaches had obviously a lot to gain from drawing on the experience of these veterans, there were many occasions where the flow of ideas was reversed as new and imaginative solutions to old problems were suggested by the debutantes.

The topics covered included: long term athlete development; retention and dropout; coaching philosophy; group management; preventative discipline; basics of skill learning; coaching roles; instruction of technical fundamentals; teaching sparring through a games for understanding approach; physical development of the child athlete; observation, analysis and delivery of feedback; safety and communication skills. All courses delivered by IMAC follow an integrated model and make use of adult learning principles. As such, each participant was involved in lectures, group discussions, role play, practical coaching tasks and problem solving activities in a 100% ITF Taekwon-Do focused programme. The weekend finished on a high following a practical coaching session in which all participants had a short opportunity to deliver a prepared activity to a group of local Taekwon-Do students, all aged 6 - 8 and very VERY real! For the experienced coaches this was still a challenge as the group was entirely unknown to them, but for the less experienced this was a chance to test all they had been learning and to get a feel for what it might be like to lead a class on their own.

At the conclusion of the course all coaches were given the opportunity to give their anonymous feedback to the delivery team through an evaluation report questionnaire. They were also encouraged to give any personal thoughts, particularly by way of suggestions on how to improve delivery for future courses. The following are the comments of the coaches.

Feedback:
Thanks for such a good course!!
Very impressed with the course, the delivery was excellent.
The tutors exemplified the advice they were giving
Fantastic course, well delivered by all tutors. Good to know that the certificates for coaching are now important for instructors of all ITA clubs as this will definitely improve everyone's level of teaching.
Very enjoyable experience. As an assistant instructor it was very informative on how to keep younger students interested.
Very well run course with good ideas for future coaching. Also, was a comfortable environment to work in.
I felt the weekend was informative and well worth the money. I feel I have more material to work with and know what I can improve on in my own classes. The tutors were excellent and I enjoyed it.
Enjoyable, informative and positive course. Well done and thank you.
Found the course very helpful and learned a lot from the tutors and other participants.
Good course, well delivered and very helpful.
I felt I was educated again in the art of teaching young kids (6-8) Great ideas were got and the interaction of all was made possible by the friendly atmosphere.
Well done, great weekend.
Very challenging course but made to feel at ease at the same time.
Really enjoyed the course. Very well delivered and informative. Lots of practice instruction and games to bring back to my own class. Many thanks.
Loved the way you brought (actual!) kids to coach - good experience. Lots of great encouragement.
Very progressive and structured. Well presented and delivered in a fashion that made it understandable to all in attendance.
Overall very worthwhile. Very glad I took the course.

Constructive criticism!
The level of difficulty was challenging but manageable, however I do think that we were a bit short on time.
More time than necessary was tied up with discipline (class management) issues
I would have liked more time dealing with the children in the fundamentals
Some images were quite dark (projected images during presentations)
A lot of terms were ITA based. I would like to make sure the Taekwon-Do is universal. ie. "the chamber"
