Irish Cup 2011 Report

Irish Cup 2011 Report

The Irish Taekwon-Do Association Irish Cup took place on Saturday the 19th and Sunday the 20th of November 2011. This year the event was held in the state of the art University of Limerick, Sports Arena (venue for the International Umpire Course June 2012). 530 competitors took part in the event over the two days in junior, cadet and senior categories for sparring and patterns as well as power breaking and special technique for black belts, with 473 competitors coming from ITA as well as competitors coming from INTA and RITA.

The competition started promptly at 10.00am on both days and ran precisely to schedule thanks to the tireless work of the umpires. We had 30 umpires on day one and 55 on day two.  Mr. Richard Park and Mr. Adrian Byrne had all draws prepared on the ITA T5 system in advance; this enabled all coaches to receive individual schedules for their competitors on arrival, which showed which ring and which time their category would commence. On Saturday the 19th the competition took place for all cadet (14 – 17 year olds) and seniors 18 years and over on three competition areas. This also included national team selections for the 2012 European Championships and some of the ITA’s top competitors including many European and World medallists took part. In the sparring categories both pool and requalification systems were used which guaranteed extra bouts for all competitors.

The arena was beautifully decorated with Taekwon-Do Banners, including large ITF and AETF flags and a picture of General Choi. We also had three ITF electronic scoring systems in use for the sparring competition and three 50-inch flat screen plasma TVs for displaying to the public. This added greatly to the professionalism of the event and many members of the public attended to watch the black belt competition.

On Sunday the 20th, the under 13 years competition took place over six rings. This event started at 10.00am sharp and with the work of the 55 umpires under the supervision of Mr. Adrian Byrne, Tournament Administrator, Mr. Mark Buckley, Tournament Director and Mr Stephen Ryan, Umpire Chair, the competition ended before 4.00pm on all rings.  The level of competition over the two days was excellent in all categories.  Special thanks must go to the ITA tournament and umpire committee, the umpires the 530 competitors, the volunteers, and the Midwest Taekwon-Do Schools local organising committee who made this event a fantastic success.

The next ITA Irish Cup takes place on Saturday the 17th and Sunday the 18th of November 2012 and is open to all ITF members (info will be available on the ITA website www.taekwondo.ie)

The Top competitors at the event were: Chloe Aboud with 3 Golds, Anne Marie Torsney, Katy Laffan, Louise McCagh, Philip O'Gorman and Gavin Wills who all won 2 golds
