The fifth edition of the ITA Southern Championships was held in the Little Island Sports Centre in Cork on 18th February 2007. As ever this event was very well attended, with 352 junior and cadet competitors from 25 clubs and hundreds of spectators.
There were many significant achievements but most notably we had three grand champions (winning Gold in pattern and sparring) in the black belt divisions. Philip McAuliffe, Louise McCagh and Keith Cooley were presented with Grand Champion Cups in recognition of their achievements.
Mahon/Bandon, coached by Mr. Coughlan won the best club award in their home event with 82 points, followed by Rivervalley/Ratoath (66 points) coached by Mr. Cooley and Shannon/Tipperary coached by Mr. Byrne (60 points).
For the younger students the Cork instructors ran a mini tournament on the 17th February. An additional 100 competitors aged 6-7 yrs took part in a touch sparring event with every competitor receiving and award.
