ITA Dublin Open Report 2014

The 2014 ITA Dublin Open took place in the National Basketball Arena, Dublin on the weekend of the 5th & 6th of April. The tournament was made up of 621 competitors from Ireland, Norway, Scotland, Canada, Czech Republic and Italy. The tournament began on Saturday with competitors aged 14 – 17 and seniors competing across 6 rings in patterns, sparring, special technique and power-test. There was very high standard on the floor with many World & European champions and established competitors including Hong Looi, Louise McCagh, Luke Woods, Stephen Ryan, Gilles Brown & Dylan Fitzgibbon.

The competition was run in a very professional manner, at the start of the day each competitor received a sticker with their competition category, ring & start time, each ring was run with the electronic scoring system, increasing the efficiency of the event and making it more exciting for spectators. The sparring sections where run on a pool & requalification system, meaning each competitor had a number of rounds, after they were eliminated from the main draw they entered another draw where they competed for bronze. The standard of competition was very high, with many top level athletes taking part in each division, it made for an excellent tournament that was very entertaining for spectators and all involved. The best overall blackbelt competitor awards were awarded to:

Best Overall Senior Male: Eddie Dillon
Best Overall Senior Female: Not Awarded (as many competitors tied)
Best Cadet Male: Michael McRoberts, Scotland
Best Cadet Females: Anne-Marie Torsney and Marthe Klungerbo

Sunday was the day for competitors aged 13 & younger. As always there was a very high standard on the floor in the patterns, sparring & special technique sections. The competition was run across 8 rings with over 60 umpires & officials in attendance. There were fantastic performances on the day from many competitors including Leah Ring, Isabel Lehane, Fionn Hagon, Finn Martin, Eve Ince & Cian Ince who all took 2 Gold medals from the event.

The 2014 Dublin was the largest to date, with the most international competitors in attendance. Gratitude must be expressed to the ITA tournament committee of Mrs Laura Ryan, Mr Mark Buckley, Master Pat Barry, Mr Stephen Ryan & event organiser Mr Stephen Cooley for their work in the lead up to the tournament and over the weekend of the Dublin Open. We would also like to thank our international friends for helping to make it such a great tournament and we look forward to welcoming you all back to Ireland in the near future.  The next ITA tournament is the 15th Irish Cup which takes place in the University of Limerick on the 15th & 16th of November (Information can be found here).
