ITF Taekwon-Do Coaching Course

ITF Taekwon-Do Coaching Course

The Taekwon-Do Advisory Board of the Irish Martial Arts Commission are delighted to announce the opening of registrations for the upcoming Level 1 Coaching Course. This course will take place in Shannon Taekwon-Do Centre, Western Business Park, Shannon, Co Clare on the weekends of the 22nd and 23rd September and the 20th and 21st October. This course is the second step in the TAB coaching ladder, and is an Assistant Instructor/Coach qualification certified by IMAC and Coaching Ireland on the Coaching Development Programme for Ireland.

This is the first time that the course will be run specifically for instructors of ITF Taekwon-Do which afforded us the opportunity to completely re-write the course to maximise the integration of theory and practice. We have also been able to develop a coaches manual filled with Taekwon-Do specific examples and case studies, a guide to long term athlete development and a guide to games for physical and tactical development. The course will be delivered 100% by Taekwon-Do tutors and will cover fundamental movements, kicking techniques and patterns relating to 8th through 3rd Kup, competition sparring, as well as topics such as:

  • Role of the coach
  • Coaching Philosophy
  • Coaching for character
  • Inclusion
  • Safety
  • Club culture and environment
  • Coaching and learning styles
  • Principles of  physical fitness
  • Warm up and cool down
  • ABC’s of FUNdamental movement
  • Flexibility
  • Planning, conducting and reviewing practices
  • Skill acquisition and learning
  • Observation, analysis and feedback
  • Games for Understanding
  • Psychology of training
  • The child athlete
  • Coaching athletes with disability
  • Long Term Athlete Development
  • Nutrition and hydration
  • Doping control policies

Applications need to reach the TAB Coaching Officer by Friday 24th August. Applications will be considered complete if accompanied by:
  1. A current first aid certificate
  2. A code of ethics course certificate
  3. An Introduction to Coaching Taekwon-Do certificate
  4. The course fee of €200 (cheque or postal order)

Anybody who has completed the Introduction to Coaching course, but who has not yet received their certificate should state this in their application.

Once an application has been verified, you will be sent (by post) a copy of the Coaches Manual. The manual contains background reading for all course topics, in order that we can spend more time discussing, debating and implementing the information and less time presenting it, leading to a more involved and practical course.

The Level 1 course, unlike the Introduction to Coaching course, is assessed. This assessment consists of 5 parts:

  1. Completion of coaches manual pre-course workbook (Open book, due on 22nd September, 65% Pass mark)
  2. Full and active attendance at all modules (Missed sessions must be repeated on a later course)
  3. Two on course observed practicals (Pass / Fail, you must coach and participate in a tutor facilitated debrief)
  4. 6 session Log Book (Pass/Fail, a plan - do - review cycle of 6 sessions in your own club with written reports completed between contact weekends)
  5. Practical Assessment (65% Pass mark, conducting a planned 20min session with approx. 10 children aged 9-12 8th to 3rd Kup)

The coaches manual contains full details of each assessment, as well as the scoring rubrics and competencies.

All questions should be sent to Adrian Byrne: midwesttkd@me.com

Looking forward to seeing you or your members in September

Kind Regards
