Report by Mr. Leonard Coughlan:

The fourteenth year of the ITF summer camp in Greece has just taken place; under the expert guidance of 8th Degree Taekwon-Do Master Alexandris Vasilis. The camp ran from Mon 2nd-Mon 9th August at the Olympus Zeus Bungalows. What better location  to evoke the feeling that the greatness of the gods of mythology is within our frail human reach than at this training camp at the base of mount Olympus; where we were inspired to reach for the summit. Do I sound a little poetic; do you doubt that a summer camp can be such a life changing experience?  Well let me give you the facts and you can decide for yourself.

Ireland was represented by two members of Mahon Taekwon-Do Club; Mr. Leonard Coughlan 3rd degree and Miss. Sarah Sheehan 1st degree. As they arrived at Volos airport the Irish contingent were surprised and honoured to find that Master Vasilis had come to the airport to welcome them, with his translator and student Mike Mouratidis. They were also greeted with a  banquet back at the camp laid on especially for their late night arrival; this impressive display of food and drink was indicative of the quality of refreshment to be provided for the rest of the week.

Australian instructor Spiridon Cariotis commented that this was one of the training highlights of the year. We can surely understand why, when, not only is the accommodation second to none, but, the full schedule of events is sensational. The full itinerary includes training and tours of the history and heritage of the locality, as well as free time to visit the nearby beach and local facilities. Examples of the daily tour locations are the tombs of Alexander the Great’s father and the Monastery to be found on Mount Olympus; at each location the history and heritage of Greece is explained by your personal interpreter.

The training for the participants involves the highest calibre of Taekwon-Do by Alexandris whose display of flexibility and kicking talent is to be marvelled at; training 7.30-8am Warm Up followed by class until 10am then 7.30-8pm Warm Up followed by class until 10pm. The intense training is scheduled morning and evening to ensure that the heat of the Greek sunshine does not detract from the energy of the participants.

The all inclusive price of €350 means that this training camp really leaves no room whatsoever for complaint. Tag this experience under sea, sun, mountain, sightseeing, and Superior Taekwon-Do training. The hospitality accorded was outstanding, the instruction of superior quality and the whole experience, inspirational. Surely by now you are already on the internet looking it up for next year, and definitely agreeing with my opening premise that this is one of those once in a lifetime not to be missed experiences.
