Umpiring Bylaw Amendment

Umpiring Bylaw Amendment

Dear Instructor,

The ITA board have decided to amend the age requirement of the ITA bylaw on umpiring from age 14 to age 16 and above. We have observed since the introduction of the bylaw a significant increase in number of officials at our tournaments which we are very happy about. We have also seen a big increase in the number of very young helpers at the tournaments. While this is positive in one sense we are also conscious that we have not been able to facilitate giving a job to all the younger helpers due to their age and level of training. We are also conscious that this may cause some tension between instructors and the parents of some of these younger students. With this in mind we are amending the age requirement for the bylaw to 16 and above. We believe that this will naturally increase the age profile of officials at our events. We will observe how this progresses over the next few events and if needed will revisit it in the future, as we continue to improve the structures of ITA and assess our rules and their effectiveness on a continuous basis.

As training is also a key element in the quality of our events, we also plan to increase the frequency of training/workshops available in the near future so that all officials are given the opportunity to up skill ahead of each tournament.

We sincerely thank you for your continued support.

If you have any questions on this or other matters please do not hesitate to email me.
